Jfile Enterprise is a simple flat file
database application that runs on the Palm
Computing® operating system (i.e.
PalmPilots, Palm III, Palm V, etc). Jfile
Enterprise can be used to extend the reach
of your FileMaker or Access database by
allowing you to literally load your
desktop database into your Palm
Organizer.
In addition, Jfile Enterprise allows
full compatibility with special bar code
reading Palm Organizers (pictured left)
manufactured by Symbol technologies. These
special Palm Organizers are modeled after
a Palm III, but contain an integrated
laser bar code reader.

The SPT 1500, SPT 1700, and CSM 1500 can
literally scan bar codes and then push the data
from the bar code into the JFile Enterprise
database that is running at the time.
Connecting JFile Enterprise to FileMaker Pro
is easy with FMSync, the FileMaker Pro conduit for
the Palm O.S. After scanning bar codes with your
Symbol/Palm Organizer, simply "dock" your Palm
Organizer with your desktop computer. The FMSync
conduit takes over and automatically downloads
all the bar code data out of JFile Enterprise and
into your desktop FileMaker Pro database.
FileMaker Inc sells a Palm OS based database
called FileMaker Mobile. This product is
roughly equivalent to JFile (non enterprise
edition) version 3.x. Clearly, FileMaker
Mobile is not a competitor to JFile Enterprise,
FileMaker Mobile since it does not offer bar
code scanning as a feature. FileMaker Mobile is
useful for those users who want to load a basic
database on tyheir palm from their Mac or Windows
based computer.
Connecting JFile Enterprise to Microsoft
Access uses a similar methodology, except that
the Jet
File conduit is used.
