What is the current shipping version of JFile Enterprise?

JFile Enterprise's current shipping version is 4.1g. Free upgrade have been sent to all eligible customers. We are aware of a bug with 4.1g that will be resolved ASAP. This bug affects connected Dynasys hardware, not Symbol units..

What is the difference between JFile, JFile Pro and JFile Enterprise?

This is a bit confusing to explain, but JFile Pro no longer exists due to a trademark lawsuit. Currently there is JFile 4.X and JFile Enterprise 4.X

JFile Enterprise edition contains all the functionality of JFile Pro, plus adds the ability to scan bar codes when used with a special version of a Palm III, called the Symbol SPT 1500 or SPT 1700.

What is the difference between JFile Enterprise and FileMaker Mobile?

FileMaker Inc sells a Palm OS based database called FileMaker Mobile. This product is roughly equivalent to JFile (non enterprise edition) version 3.x. Clearly, FileMaker Mobile is not a competitor to JFile Enterprise since FileMaker Mobile does not offer bar code scanning as a feature. Users who load FileMaker Mobile on a Symbol SPT 1500 or 1700 will quickly learn that the FileMaker Mobile is completely unaware that a bar code reader is installed on the handheld device. FileMaker Mobile is useful for those users who want to load a basic database on tyheir palm from their Mac or Windows based computer.

I'm a FileMaker User. Which version can I use FileMaker Pro 4.0 or 5.0 for Macintosh?

Jfile itself does not talk to FileMaker Pro. However a conduit from FMSync can bridge the gap allowing data to move between JFile and FileMaker for Macintosh. Users of JFile Enterprise 4.x should be using "FMSync for JFile Pro."

I want to exchange data between JFile Enterprise and FileMaker Pro on my PC running Windows!

JFile Enterprise runs on the Palm OS, and does not differentiate between Windows and Macintosh. However, FMSync, used to connect JFile to FileMaker Pro is a Macintosh only product. FMSync engineers are evaluating ways to bring the product to the Windows platform, however the inherent limitations of FileMaker Pro on the windows platform is a serious obstacle to this development. For more information on FMSync platform availability, visit www.FMSync.com.

What is this special Palm Organizer that can scan bar codes?

There are fours different units manufactured by Symbol Technologies under license from Palm Computing Inc.
Called the SPT 1500, SPT 1700, CSM 1500.

  1. The SPT 1500 is a Palm III with an added laser bar codes scanner. It uses the same batteries, and has the same display screen as the Palm III. The unit costs approximately $500. The scanner on the 1500 only read 1D bar codes. For more information, you can read Symbol Technologies PDF document on the SPT 1500.
  2. The SPT 1700 (end-of-life) is a ruggedized unit, designed for harsh environments, although it is very similar to the 1500. For more information, you can read Symbol Technologies PDF document on the SPT 1700. The approximate price of the SPT 1700 is $940.00.
  3. The SPT 1700 currently being produced is physicaly idential to the original SPT 1700, although it scans 1D and 2D bar codes and replaces the older 1D only SPT 1700.
  4. The CSM 1500 is a 1D scanner module designed for the HandSpring Visor PDA. The Visor is a Palm OS clone, so JFile should work fine here as well, although out test units has not arrived yet.

Why does JFile Enterprise cost more than the regular version of JFile?

JFile Enterprise is designed for serious business and government applications such as inventory control or use with event planning companies. Special engineering costs have been spent in bringing JFile Enterprise to the public, so this results in a higher price.

JFile Enterprise can run on my Palm III?

JFile Enterprise is designed to operate on any Palm Organizer including the Handspring's Visor, PalmPilot Professional, Palm III, Palm IIIx, Palm V, Palm VII, SPT 1500 and the SPT 1700. The bar code reading functionality is only available when using JFile Enterprise on the SPT 1500 or SPT 1700, or connected Dynasys bar code gun.

How Do I exchange data with FileMaker Pro?

Leveraging a Palm Organizer with FileMaker Pro requires the use of three products, and a Macintosh computer.

(1) JFile Enterprise (or JFile non-Enterprise version )

(2) FMSync

(3) FileMaker Pro on Macintosh

To simplify purchasing, we are offering the Palm Action Pack, a bundle of JFile Enterprise and FMSync, giving a FileMaker user everything they need right out of the box. Click here for ordering information.

How do I order a Symbol SPT 1500 or SPT 1700?
Richard Carlton Consulting Inc does not resell hardware. We recommend purchasing the Symbol unit from a respectable reseller like:

John Mercado
Lowry Computer Products, Inc.
700 Gale Drive, Suite 140
Campbell, CA 95008
Voice (408) 866-9460 • FAX (408) 866-9463

Is there anyway I can protect my SPT 1500 from being dropped and broken ?

The best way to protect a SPT 1500 is to buy Symbol's rubber "boot" for the unit. This molded rubber add-on protects the SPT 1500 if it is dropped. While not as rugged as a SPT 1700, this makes the SPT 1500 a much more viable option for those users who are prone to breaking their toys. :-)
